When business leaders, investors and policymakers want to understand where the economy and financial markets may be headed, few economists can match the experience or forecasting record of Dr. Allen Sinai. For more than five decades, the internationally recognized economist, financial market strategist and keynote speaker has analyzed the forces driving the U.S. and global economies—and anticipated some of the most consequential economic and market turning points of the modern era. His extraordinary track record has led to a remarkable distinction: Dr. Sinai arguably appears to be “the most accurate forecaster in the history of economics.” Today, Allen Sinai is President and Chief Global Economist/Strategist of Decision Economics, Inc., where his research, forecasting and strategic insights help financial institutions, corporations, investors and other decisionmakers navigate economic change and financial market uncertainty.
An Economic Forecaster with an Extraordinary Track Record
Dr. Sinai has correctly anticipated many of the defining economic and market events of the modern era. In the early 1980s, he forecast the Reagan economic boom and warned of the October 1987 stock market crash just before it happened. In early 1992, he called the economic boom and great equity bull market of the 1990s, later identified the Internet bubble and its bursting in 1999–2000, and correctly predicted the recessions of 1990–91 and 2000–01.
Forecasting the Great Recession and the Next Bull Market
Among Sinai’s most significant calls was his advance forecasting of the Great Recession and Financial Crisis of 2006–09. He warned of the coming collapse of the U.S. economy and financial markets well in advance and, while the consensus expected a rapid “V”-shaped recovery, predicted the unusually weak, “L”-like expansion that followed. Sinai then anticipated the equity bull market that began in March 2009 and called its start on March 10, 2009. With the exception of the brief COVID-19 downturn in 2020, he has correctly called every equity bull and bear market since the 1970s.
From COVID-19 to the No-Recession Forecast
Sinai correctly forecast the uniquely short, two-month COVID-induced economic depression and its unusually rapid end. Since then, he has maintained a continuing-expansion, “No Recession” outlook even as many economists anticipated recession, including widespread recession expectations heading into 2024. He has also emphasized the emergence of a technology-driven productivity boom, exceptionally strong corporate profits and a continuing long-term equity bull market—another example of his willingness to look beyond conventional economic wisdom.

More Than Five Decades at the Center of Economics and Financial Markets
Sinai combines academic economics with extensive firsthand experience in business, investing, Wall Street and government policymaking. At Data Resources, Inc. (DRI), he worked closely with renowned economist Otto Eckstein and became Chief Financial Economist, co-builder and co-author of the DRI Model of the U.S. Economy. In 1983, Sinai was recruited by Lehman Brothers, where he became a Managing Director and Chief Global Economist. He later served as Executive Vice President and Chief Economist at The Boston Company and spent 22 years on the Board of Directors of Boston Private Financial Holdings.
Trusted by Presidents, Congress and Global Policymakers
Independent and nonpartisan throughout his career, Dr. Sinai has advised both Republican and Democratic Administrations, testified before the U.S. Congress dozens of times and provided insights to institutions and policymakers including the Federal Reserve, Bank of Japan and Japan Ministry of Finance. He has published more than 100 articles in academic journals, books and other periodicals and has taught at institutions including MIT, NYU, Boston University and Brandeis University.
Perhaps the Most Frequently Cited and Quoted Economist Ever
Over his career, Sinai has been described as perhaps “the most frequently cited and quoted economist ever in the written and TV media.” He has appeared extensively across major financial and news media and has twice been featured on the cover of Money Magazine. His professional honors include the Alfred Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award, Otto Eckstein Prize in Economics and Northwestern University Merit Service Award. Boston Magazine also selected him as one of Boston’s Ten “Smartest People.”
