Eric Heiden Speaker Biography
Winner of 5 Olympic Gold Medals for Speed Skating, Orthopedic Surgeon, and Performance Expert
Earning more medals in a single Olympics than any previous Olympic athlete and setting 15 world records in his speed skating career, Dr. Eric Heiden is a true American sports icon. At the 1980 Lake Placid Olympic Winter Games, he won the Gold in all five speed skating events, including sprint and distance, while setting four Olympic records and one world record.
Cycling
After retiring from speed skating, Dr. Eric Heiden began a second career in cycling. He quickly rose to the top, winning a United States Cycling Championship and competing with the 7-11 team in the 1986 Tour de France just a few years later. By 1991, Dr. Eric Heiden had earned his medical degree from Stanford University and was ready to begin his third career – what he considers his life work – as an orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine.
Orthopedic Surgeon
In 2006, Dr. Eric Heiden and his wife, Dr. Karen Heiden, relocated to Park City and after working extensively with The Orthopedic Specialty Hospital (TOSH), established their own orthopedic practice. As an orthopedic surgeon, he finds that his experiences skating and cycling help him form a unique connection with his patients, many of whom are injured athletes.
Book
In 2009, Dr. Heiden co-authored Faster, Better, Stronger: Your Exercise Bible, for a Leaner, Healthier Body in Just 12 Weeks with Dr. Max Testa. Faster, Better, Stronger explains high performance athletic concepts in simple language and provides safe and sane training advice for those who are not physicians. Faster, Better, Stronger, was named one of the top ten books of the year by Disaboom.com, and contains stories from Dr. Heiden at the Olympics and from Dr. Testa about helping the world’s top cyclists as well as elderly and obese patients.
