Former IMF First Deputy Managing Director and Chief Economist, and Global Economic Policy Expert
Gita Gopinath is one of the world’s most influential economists and a leading authority on the global economy, international finance, monetary policy, trade, economic crises, and the forces reshaping global growth. Gita Gopinath spent more than six years at the International Monetary Fund, first as Chief Economist and later as First Deputy Managing Director, the IMF’s second-highest-ranking official. Her tenure coincided with an extraordinary period for the world economy that included the COVID-19 pandemic, historic inflation, rapidly changing interest rates, geopolitical conflict, growing sovereign debt, and increasing fragmentation of global trade and investment. Her experience at the center of international economic policymaking gives Gopinath a rare perspective on how decisions made by governments, central banks, businesses, and financial institutions interact across an increasingly interconnected—and increasingly uncertain—global economy.

First Woman to Serve as IMF Chief Economist
In 2019, Gita Gopinath became the first woman in the history of the International Monetary Fund to serve as its Chief Economist. As Economic Counsellor and Director of the IMF’s Research Department, Gopinath led the Fund’s economic research and oversaw 13 releases of its flagship World Economic Outlook. Her tenure included guiding the IMF’s economic analysis and forecasts through the unprecedented disruption of the COVID-19 pandemic. Gita Gopinath also co-authored the IMF’s influential “Pandemic Paper,” which helped lead to the creation of a multilateral task force involving the IMF, World Bank, World Trade Organization, and World Health Organization. Her work helped policymakers understand both the immediate economic consequences of the pandemic and the importance of a coordinated global response.
IMF First Deputy Managing Director
Gopinath became First Deputy Managing Director of the IMF in 2022, expanding her responsibilities from economic research to the broader work of the institution. As the IMF’s #2 official, Gita Gopinath represented the Fund at major international forums, including meetings of the G7 and G20, and engaged directly with finance ministers, central bankers, government leaders, and policymakers around the world. Her responsibilities included overseeing economic surveillance and important IMF programs, including those involving Argentina and Ukraine, while addressing issues ranging from inflation and monetary policy to sovereign debt, international trade, financial stability, and geopolitical fragmentation. This combination of scholarship and firsthand policymaking distinguishes Gopinath from economists who have observed global economic events solely from academia or financial markets.
Harvard Economist and Founder of the Global Economics Lab
Gita Gopinath returned to Harvard University following her IMF service and is the Gregory and Ania Coffey Professor of Economics and Professor of Public Policy at Harvard Kennedy School. She is also the founding Director of Harvard’s Global Economics Lab, an initiative bringing rigorous economic research to some of the most consequential policy questions facing governments, businesses, and financial markets. The Lab’s work includes artificial intelligence, stablecoins and dollar dominance, international trade and finance, and integrated economic and financial policies. Through this work, Gopinath continues to examine not only the economic challenges leaders face today but also the emerging forces likely to reshape the global economy in the years ahead.
Inflation, Interest Rates and Monetary Policy
Monetary policy has been a central focus throughout Gita Gopinath’s research and international policy career. Her expertise encompasses inflation, exchange rates, international capital flows, financial crises, debt, and the transmission of monetary policy across economies. Gita Gopinath helps leaders understand how decisions by major central banks can reverberate through currencies, financial markets, emerging economies, investment, and international trade. Her perspective is particularly valuable when economic objectives conflict. Policymakers may need to contain inflation while protecting growth, maintain financial stability while adjusting interest rates, or manage high levels of public debt while responding to new economic shocks. Rather than treating these issues in isolation, Gopinath examines how they interact within the larger global financial system.
Trade, Geopolitics and Economic Fragmentation
Gita Gopinath has become an important voice on the economic consequences of geopolitical fragmentation. Trade restrictions, tariffs, national security concerns, industrial policy, geopolitical alliances, and efforts to restructure supply chains are changing patterns of global commerce and investment. Gopinath examines what these changes mean for businesses and economies, including the potential costs of fragmentation and the ways geopolitical relationships can increasingly influence investment and trade. Her research provides leaders with a framework for understanding a world in which economic efficiency, national security, resilience, and geopolitical strategy are becoming increasingly intertwined.
AI and the Future of Economic Growth
Artificial intelligence has introduced a new set of opportunities and risks for the global economy. Gita Gopinath examines how AI could influence productivity, labor markets, investment, economic growth, and inequality. The technology has the potential to generate significant productivity gains, but its benefits may be unevenly distributed across industries, workers, and countries. Gopinath’s work considers these questions from a macroeconomic perspective, helping leaders look beyond individual AI applications to understand how widespread adoption could affect economies, financial systems, and society. For business audiences, her perspective connects the AI revolution to larger questions involving productivity, workforce transformation, competitiveness, investment, and long-term economic growth.
The Dollar, Stablecoins and the Future of Money
Gita Gopinath is also examining how technological and geopolitical change could reshape the international monetary system. The U.S. dollar remains central to global trade and finance, but stablecoins, digital payments, changing trading relationships, and geopolitical fragmentation are creating important new questions about the future of money. Gopinath explores how these developments could affect dollar dominance, cross-border payments, capital flows, monetary sovereignty, emerging economies, and financial stability. Her work provides a sophisticated perspective on a rapidly developing area where technology, finance, economics, and geopolitics increasingly intersect.
Globally Recognized Economist and Policy Leader
Gita Gopinath’s scholarship and international leadership have earned recognition around the world. She has been elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Econometric Society and received the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman, the highest honor conferred by the Government of India on overseas Indians. Gopinath has also received recognition from TIME, Financial Times, Foreign Policy, and Fortune India for her influence in economics and global policy. Her research has been published in leading academic journals, and she has addressed audiences at central banks, universities, economic forums, policy institutions, and international conferences around the world.
Education and Academic Career
Gita Gopinath earned her Ph.D. in economics from Princeton University. Her earlier education included the University of Washington, Delhi School of Economics, and Lady Shri Ram College at the University of Delhi. Before joining Harvard, Gopinath was an assistant professor of economics at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. At Harvard, she established herself as a leading scholar in international macroeconomics before taking leave to serve at the IMF. Her unusual combination of academic scholarship and experience at the highest levels of international economic policymaking allows Gita Gopinath to connect economic theory with the practical decisions confronting governments, central banks, investors, and business leaders.
