CEO & Co-Founder of New Story
Brett is the CEO, Co-Founder of New Story, an innovative nonprofit founded in 2015 that pioneers solutions to end global homelessness. Brett’s a Y Combinator alum, 2016 Forbes 30 Under 30 Entrepreneur, author, speaker and cancer survivor. Fast Company recognized New Story as one of “The World’s Most Innovative Companies” in 2017 and 2019 as a Top 10 nonprofit, and Brett was named one of the Top 100 Most Intriguing Entrepreneurs by Goldman Sachs in 2018.
Revival
Before founding New Story, Brett lived a self-consuming lifestyle that led to unfulfillment in his early twenties. Longing for a bigger purpose and a more meaningful life, he made a complete 180 through a revived Christian faith that completely changed his heart and values.
Haiti
This change led to a trip to Haiti in 2013 where he met families living in tent slums because hundreds of thousands of homes were destroyed in the 2010 earthquake. Although his heart was broken seeing kids growing up in life-threatening tents without life’s most basic human needs, he still did not think he’d start a nonprofit because so many already exist.
The Search
Brett found the cause to champion, and searched for nonprofits that were innovating, being radically transparent and accountable, using technology, taking risks to achieve breakthroughs, and pushing to challenge traditional methods. He couldn’t find organizations with those principles.
New Story
Seeing an entrepreneurial opportunity to create a different kind of nonprofit, New Story was founded shortly after my 25th birthday. In four years, New Story has funded 2,300+ homes, building 16 communities, raised over $25M, and is on track to 3D print the first community in history in 2019. New Story is an entrepreneurial example that proves a small group of millennials with extraordinary effort and a unique approach can build an organization that disrupts the status quo and changes thousands of lives.
