Victor Glover Speaker Biography

Historic Artemis II Pilot, First Black Astronaut to Travel Beyond Low-Earth Orbit, Record-Setting Deep-Space Explorer, and Leadership Keynote Speaker

Victor Glover is a history-making astronaut, engineer, retired U.S. Navy Captain, Naval Aviator, test pilot, combat veteran, and inspirational leadership keynote speaker. In April 2026, he served as pilot of NASA’s historic Artemis II mission around the Moon, helping return humans to the lunar environment for the first time in more than 50 years. The nearly 10-day journey carried Glover and his crewmates 252,756 miles from Earth, farther than any humans had ever traveled before. Glover also made history as the first person of color to travel beyond low-Earth orbit. His extraordinary career—from combat aviation and aircraft carriers to the International Space Station, four spacewalks, and a record-setting journey around the Moon—gives him a rare perspective on leadership, teamwork, resilience, innovation, preparation, and performing under extreme pressure.

Historic Pilot of NASA’s Artemis II Mission

On April 1, 2026, Victor Glover launched aboard NASA’s Space Launch System rocket as pilot of Artemis II, joining commander Reid Wiseman, mission specialist Christina Koch, and Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen aboard the Orion spacecraft Integrity. The mission marked humanity’s return to the vicinity of the Moon for the first time in more than half a century. During the historic lunar journey, Artemis II reached a maximum distance of 252,756 miles from Earth, establishing a new record for the farthest human spaceflight. The crew safely splashed down off the coast of San Diego on April 10 after nearly 10 days in space. For Glover, Artemis II also represented a historic personal milestone: he became the first person of color to travel beyond low-Earth orbit, adding another groundbreaking achievement to a career defined by exploration, service, and leadership.

International Space Station and SpaceX Crew-1

Artemis II was Glover’s second journey into space. His first came in November 2020 when he served as pilot of NASA’s SpaceX Crew-1 mission aboard the Crew Dragon Resilience. After arriving at the International Space Station, Glover served as a flight engineer for Expedition 64/65. He spent 168 days in space, participated in scientific research, technology demonstrations, maintenance and outreach activities, and completed four spacewalks. He became the first Black astronaut to complete an extended stay aboard the International Space Station. Across Crew-1 and Artemis II, Glover has accumulated 178 days in space.

Congressional Space Medal of Honor

In August 2026, Glover and his Artemis II crewmates received the Congressional Space Medal of Honor in recognition of their service during the historic mission. The award is among the highest honors bestowed upon astronauts for extraordinary accomplishment in spaceflight. Glover’s other honors include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, NASA Distinguished Service Medal, NASA Space Exploration Medal, and two Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals. He was also named to the 2023 TIME100 Next list.

U.S. Navy Captain, Naval Aviator and Test Pilot

Long before traveling to space, Glover learned to perform in high-stakes environments as a U.S. Navy officer, fighter pilot, and test pilot. During his distinguished military career, he flew the F/A-18 Hornet, Super Hornet, and EA-18G Growler. He accumulated approximately 4,000 flight hours in more than 40 aircraft, completed more than 400 carrier-arrested landings, and flew 24 combat missions. Glover was also selected as the U.S. Navy’s exchange pilot to attend the U.S. Air Force Test Pilot School. His experiences in combat aviation, flight testing, aircraft-carrier operations, and spaceflight provide compelling real-world examples of preparation, adaptability, teamwork, risk management, and decision-making under pressure.

Leadership Through Uncertainty

Throughout his career, Glover has repeatedly entered environments where there is no guarantee of success and where preparation, judgment, communication, and trust are essential. Those experiences form the foundation of his message to organizations. Glover challenges leaders to become comfortable operating amid uncertainty, remain focused when conditions change, prepare rigorously without assuming everything will go according to plan, and build teams capable of adapting when the unexpected occurs. His leadership philosophy also emphasizes service. Rather than defining leadership by authority or visibility, Glover focuses on empowering others, listening, building trust, accepting accountability, and helping every member of a team understand how their contribution advances the larger mission. His current keynote programs specifically address leading boldly through uncertainty and servant leadership.

Teamwork and High Performance

No astronaut reaches the Moon alone. NASA’s most ambitious missions require thousands of engineers, scientists, technicians, flight controllers, trainers, contractors, and crew members to work toward a shared objective. Glover uses those experiences to demonstrate why exceptional teams depend on far more than individual talent. Trust, communication, accountability, preparation, humility, and shared purpose are central to sustained high performance. Whether flying combat missions, landing on an aircraft carrier, conducting a spacewalk, or traveling around the Moon, Glover has experienced firsthand what happens when highly trained individuals unite behind a mission larger than themselves.

Engineering, Education and Continuous Learning

Glover’s accomplishments are supported by an exceptional academic foundation. He earned a Bachelor of Science in General Engineering from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, followed by a Master of Science in Flight Test Engineering from Air University, a Master of Science in Systems Engineering from the Naval Postgraduate School, and a Master of Military Operational Art and Science from Air University. He has also received honorary Doctor of Science degrees from Howard University and Cal Poly. His progression from engineering student and collegiate athlete to Naval Aviator, test pilot, astronaut, and deep-space explorer reflects his commitment to continuous learning, preparation, discipline, and personal growth.

NASA Astronaut Emeritus

Following Artemis II, Glover transitioned to NASA astronaut emeritus status in September 2026. In this role, he can continue sharing his specialized knowledge by supporting, training, and mentoring NASA personnel as the agency prepares for future Artemis missions. NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman praised Glover for exemplifying the leadership, character, and commitment that define NASA at its best and noted the importance of sharing the knowledge gained through Artemis II with future astronauts, engineers, and flight controllers.

Leadership Role at Cal Poly

In September 2026, Glover returned full time to his alma mater, Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, taking on a new administrative leadership position focused on strategic initiatives, partnerships, and philanthropy. In his new role, Glover advises university President Jeffrey D. Armstrong and other senior leaders while helping shape long-term strategies involving polytechnic education, research innovation, and workforce development. The position represents a natural extension of Glover’s career-long commitment to education, leadership, engineering, service, and developing the next generation.

Beyond the Horizon: Leading Boldly Through Uncertainty

What do you do when there is no playbook, no guarantee of success, and no room for error? As pilot of NASA’s historic Artemis II mission, Victor Glover helped lead humanity’s return to deep space for the first time in more than 50 years, traveling more than 250,000 miles from Earth into an environment where preparation, judgment, adaptability, and trust were essential. Drawing on his experiences as an astronaut, Naval Aviator, test pilot, combat veteran, and military leader, Glover reveals how individuals and teams can build confidence when outcomes are unclear, remain composed under pressure, adapt when circumstances change, and stay focused on a mission larger than themselves. He challenges audiences to rethink uncertainty—not simply as an obstacle to overcome, but as the environment where innovation, growth, discovery, and extraordinary achievement become possible. This is one of Glover’s two currently published official keynote programs.

Mission First: The Power of Servant Leadership

The most effective leaders aren’t those who seek the spotlight—they create the conditions that allow others to succeed. Throughout his career as a Naval Aviator, astronaut, military officer, and pilot of Artemis II, Glover has learned that extraordinary accomplishments are rarely the result of individual talent alone. Success depends on teams united by trust, accountability, preparation, communication, and a shared sense of purpose. In this inspiring leadership keynote, Glover explores the principles of servant leadership and demonstrates how leaders can bring out the best in their people by listening first, empowering others, sharing responsibility, and ensuring that every team member understands how their contribution advances the larger mission. From aircraft carriers and combat operations to NASA mission control and a spacecraft traveling around the Moon, Glover provides a compelling real-world demonstration of what mission-first leadership looks like when the stakes could not be higher.
