Steve Largent Speaker Biography
NFL Hall of Fame Wide Receiver, Four-Term US Congressman, and Former Wireless Association CEO
Steve Largent is a retired American football player and a former Republican politician, having served in the U.S. House of Representatives for Oklahoma, from 1994 until 2002. Before his political career, Largent was a wide receiver for the Seattle Seahawks in the National Football League for his entire 14-season professional football career. He held several all-time receiving records when he retired.
NFL Career
Largent joined the Seahawks in 1976. He was selected to the NFL Pro Bowl seven times and was the first Seahawk to earn that honor. He was also the first receiver in NFL history to achieve 100 touchdown receptions. Largent was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1995, his first year of eligibility, and received the “NFL Man of the Year” award in 1988 for his commitment to community service. Additionally, he was the first recipient of the Bart Starr Award by Athletes in Action.
Political Career
In 1994, Oklahoma’s 1st District Congressman Jim Inhofe resigned, and Largent won the election to succeed him in Congress. Largent took office on November 29, 1994, and was re-elected to the three succeeding Congresses, serving more than seven years. He decided to run for Governor of Oklahoma in 2002, resigning his House seat on February 15 to focus on the race, but was narrowly defeated by Democratic state senator Brad Henry.
Wireless CEO
After his time in Congress, Largent became President and CEO of CTIA-The Wireless Association, from November 2003 until May 2014, representing the international wireless telecommunications industry. Following this role, he managed his own advertising & marketing consulting firm.
Education
Largent holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Tulsa and has been actively involved in community services, including delivering a keynote address at a fundraising event for the Boys & Girls Clubs of King County, which raised a record $400,000.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of King County met its fundraising goal this morning raising a record $400,000 (9% increase over 2002) at the annual Campaign for Kids Breakfast. Seahawk legend and former U.S. Congressman Steve Largent delivered the keynote address at the Seattle Sheraton-held event. For the first time in the event's history, the organization was forced to turn away interested guests. More than 1,100 attendees filled the grand ballroom beyond capacity for the hour-long program.
