NBA Coaching Legend and Player
The NBA recognized Phil Jackson as one of the 10 best coaches of all time. He led the Chicago Bulls to six NBA Championships in eight seasons, and orchestrated a team of some of basketball’s leading players, including Michael Jordan.
Known for his “Zen-like” style of leadership, Jackson was more likely to give his players books than lectures. Whatever his approach, Jackson was able to mold a team of thoughtful champions who earned their way to greatness.
As a player Jackson had spent 13 years in the NBA, 11 of them with the New York Knicks. He was named the Continental Basketball Association’s Coach of the Year in 1985, the season after his Albany Patroons won the league championship. He then hooked on with the Bulls as an assistant coach. Phil Jackson replaced Doug Collins as head coach for 1989-90.
With Jackson at the helm Chicago began to mesh. Jackson became the Bull’s all-time winningest coach and he was named 1996 Coach of the Year. He ended his career with the Bulls in 1998 as the Coach of the National Champions.
