Michael Roizen Speaker Biography
Michael F. Roizen, MD, has founded six companies including one sold to Hearst and three others still in existence, co-invented a drug approved by the FDA on April 24th 2008, (receiving European and Canadian approvals the same month), co-written a medical bestseller, and 4 number one New York Times bestsellers (and seven on the list), including the number 2 bestsellers in the world in 2005 and 2006 and #3 in 2007 (people magazine reports), and is the first Chief Wellness Officer at any major academic medical center.
Dr Roizen is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Williams College and Alpha Omega Alpha graduate of the University of California, San Francisco, School of Medicine. He performed his residency in internal medicine at Harvard’s BethIsrael Hospital and completed Public Health Service at the National Institutes of Health in the laboratory of Irv Kopin and Nobel Prize winner Julius Axelrod. He is certified by both the American Boards of Internal Medicine and of Anesthesiology. Dr Roizen is the cofounder and chair of the RealAge, Inc. Scientific Advisory Board. That company was sold in late 2007 to Hearst. He is 62 calendar years of age, but his RealAge is 43.2.
Dr. Roizen is a past chair of a Food and Drug Administration advisory committee and a former editor for six medical journals. He has published more than 165 peer-reviewed scientific papers, 100 textbook chapters, 30 editorials, and 4 medical books, (one, a medical Best-seller), and received 13 U.S. and many foreign patents. He has been a founder of 6 companies, five of which are still in existence or sold to other companies. One of the drugs he patented is to have an FDA NDA day in 2008.
After 9 years on the faculty at the University of California, San Francisco, he chaired the top-10-rated department of Anesthesia and Critical Care at the University of Chicago. He then became dean of the School of Medicine and vice president for Biomedical Sciences at SUNY Upstate. After serving as CEO of the Biotechnology Research Corporation of Central New York, he accepted his current position as chair of the Division of Anesthesiology, Critical Care Medicine, and Comprehensive Pain Management at the Cleveland Clinic, responsible for over 180 operatories, 124 critical care beds and 28 pain therapy intervention units. On June 25, 2007 he was named Chief Wellness Officer of the Cleveland Clinic…the first such position at any major healthcare provider, and Chair of the Wellness Institute at the Cleveland Clinic.
His first general audience book, RealAge: Are You as Young as You Can Be? (HarperCollins Publishers) became a #1 New York Times bestseller and was awarded the Best Wellness Book of 1999 by the Books for a Better Life Awards. RealAge has been translated into more than 20 languages and was #1 in four other countries, displacing Harry Potter for 7 days as #1 on Amazon. It is translated into 44 languages—some of which he didn’t know existed). It was followed by the NY Times bestseller YOU: The Smart Patient. Their next book, YOU: On A Diet, the Owner’s Manual for Waist Management, debuted at #1 on the New York Times list (11 consecutive weeks at #1 and 17 consecutive weeks in top 3) with 21 printings totaling over 2.4 million copies in the first three weeks ( it became the #2 best selling book published in 2006 in 2006). On October 31st 2007, they released YOU: Staying Young, The Owner’s Manual For Extending Your Warranty, which became #1 at Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Border’s and Costco by the evening of November 1st. It has been on the New York Times List every week since it’s release as of January 31st, 2008.
Dr. Roizen has given over 1,400 lectures to professional medical groups and has been recognized with over 20 professional lectureships.He has appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show 18 times, Today 17 times, 20/20 (3 times), CBN (17 times), CNN, CBS Sunday Morning (3 times), Good Morning America (25 times), Canada AM (28 times), The Montel Williams Show, Larry King Live(2 times), and has executive produced three of his four PBS fundraising specials (the first fundraising special he executive produced, The RealAge Makeover was one of the top two PBS special fundraisers in 2006, with over 5000 showings in 100 TV markets; his PBS fundraising special YOU On A Diet had over 1500 showings in 76 TV markets in its first month). He and Mehmet Oz write a daily syndicated (to 65 newspapers in USA and Canada) newspaper column, a column for every issue of the association of women’s nursing magazine, and record 1 hour a day of radio for Oprah and Friends, XM channel 156 and Direct TV 107. He also has a 2-hour 26 station Terrestrial show entitled: YOU The Owner’s Manual Radio Show, live every Saturday. He has been featured in Fortune, O, Glamour, Cosmo, Good Housekeeping, Ladies’ Home Journal, Biography, People, US, Men’s Health, & Prevention.
Dr. Roizen still practices anesthesiology and internal medicine, using the RealAge metric to motivate his patients. He has personally delivered medical care to 8 Nobel Prize winners, more than 507 ex-smokers, over 100 Fortune 500 CEOs and CFOs, and countless others. He chaired the United Way Fund Raising effort at the Cleveland Clinic in 2006 (it achieved record results, including over a 15% increase in donations to become one of the top 3 healthcare organizations in United Way Donations), and has served on the boards of five non-profit foundations. He served as President of the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists in 1997-8, and has won over 75 trophies in class A squash competition. He has been in the Best Doctors in America since 1989. His wife is a developmental pediatrician also listed in the Best Doctors in America. She chairs the section of developmental pediatrics and psychology at Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital in Cleveland.
