Erik Lindbergh Speaker Biography
Grandson of Charles Lindbergh, Pilot, Entrepreneur, XPRIZE Co-Founder, TEDx Speaker, and Aviation Innovator
Erik Lindbergh is an artist, entrepreneur, pilot, and speaker dedicated to advancing aviation innovation and inspiring the next generation of explorers. He is the grandson of aviation pioneers Charles and Anne Morrow Lindbergh and has built a career at the intersection of aerospace, sustainability, and human achievement.
Aviation Background & Early Career
An accomplished pilot, Erik holds commercial, instrument, flight instructor, and glider ratings. In 1996, he helped launch the XPRIZE Foundation in St. Louis, supporting the creation of incentive competitions designed to drive breakthrough innovation in science and technology.
Spirit of Flight & XPRIZE Legacy
In 2002, Erik retraced his grandfather’s historic 1927 solo flight from New York to Paris in a modern experimental aircraft. The journey raised over $1 million for XPRIZE and generated hundreds of millions of media impressions in the pre-social media era. The nine-year “overnight success” story helped accelerate interest in private spaceflight and is featured in How to Make a Spaceship by Julian Guthrie.
Centennial Vision (1927–2027)
Erik is currently engaged in initiatives tied to the upcoming 100th anniversary of Charles A. Lindbergh’s 1927 transatlantic flight. These efforts focus on developing ambitious new incentive prize concepts and related programming across STEM education, innovation forums, events, and global engagement leading toward the 2027 Paris Air Show. The goal is to expand support for breakthrough innovation and inspire large-scale positive global impact through prize-driven solutions.
Electric Aviation & Clean Flight Innovation
In 2011, Erik awarded the Lindbergh Prize for Quietest Aircraft at NASA’s Green Flight Challenge, highlighting the potential of cleaner aviation technologies. Building on this work, he founded Powering Imagination to help accelerate the development of electric aviation and inspire future innovators in sustainable flight.
Advanced Air Mobility & eVTOL Development
Erik has also been involved in efforts to advance electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft and personal air mobility concepts. Through industry collaboration, including work with VerdeGo Aero, he supports the development of next-generation aviation systems aimed at transforming regional and urban transportation.
Overcoming Obstacles
Erik’s personal journey reflects resilience and adaptability. He excelled in athletics as a youth, including gymnastics, water skiing, and alpine and telemark ski racing. After climbing Mount Rainier at age 21, he was later diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, which became severely disabling by his early 30s. Following major knee replacements and advances in biotechnology treatment, he regained mobility and returned to an active lifestyle. Today, he is an avid mountain biker, backcountry skier, and designer of handcrafted furniture and sculpture.
Leadership & Affiliations
Erik is a passionate advocate for innovation and future-focused education. He serves as Chairman of the Charles and Anne Morrow Lindbergh Foundation and has been involved with the XPRIZE Foundation as a trustee and advisor. He also contributed as a founding director of Aviation High School in Seattle, which has ranked among the top schools in Washington State.
Erik Lindbergh Speaking Topics
Decarbonizing Aviation Using Incentive Prizes
Aviation is the hardest industry to transform to zero carbon emissions because it is mass constrained and requires high energy. The industry needs to move to sustainability or face increasing constraints. What is the best way to accelerate and scale solutions for the barriers to sustainable aviation? Prizes. Prizes helped develop the aviation industry and helped create the private spaceflight industry. The Lindbergh Foundation has partnered with the XPRIZE Foundation, The National Business Aviation Association and The Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation to create the Forever Flight Alliance. Dubbed "Speed dating for radical solutionists" The alliance is activating a brain trust to identify and quantify the barriers to sustainable aviation and then design incentive prizes to accelerate the solutions to those stuck areas.
Escape From Gravity - Leveraging Innovation in Aerospace and Beyond
Erik Lindbergh, grandson of pioneering aviator Charles Lindbergh, has been on lifelong quest to Escape From Gravity. His interests have ranged from aviation to sports, a second chance at life, and dreams of spaceflight and beyond.
Prize Driven Innovation
Erik Lindbergh shares his story and makes the case for timely prize philanthropy as a key driver of innovation in aviation, spaceflight, and for many areas of human endeavor.
Overcoming Obstacles
Erik’s story is one of triumph over adversity. He won the Washington state gymnastics championship all-around at age 11 and excelled in water-skiing, and alpine and telemark ski racing during his teens. After climbing and skiing Mount Rainier at age 21, he was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis and by age 30 was completely disabled. Total knee replacements and a breakthrough biotechnology drug gave him a second chance at living a physically active life. After years of patient persistence Erik has rebuilt his physical fitness and is now a bonafide member of the OGR's (#OldGuysRockin) as an expert mountain biker and backcountry skier.
